Highlights from the 2025 Healthy Youth Survey

Mental Health and Well-being

  • About 1 in 3 Washington 10th graders reported feeling nervous, anxious, on edge, or not being able to stop or control worrying.
  • Most mental health outcomes, including hope, show signs of continued improvement.
  • About 6 in 10 participating 10th graders reported having an adult they can turn to when they feel sad or hopeless. These youth were less likely to report feeling anxious, self-harm behaviors, or contemplating or attempting suicide than their peers who reported no adult support. This reinforces research indicating that supportive adults and systems have a positive influence on the health and well-being of youth.

Hope

  • About 3 in 4 surveyed 10th graders reported feelings of moderate to high hope – meaning they have set meaningful goals or pathways and are motivated to achieve them.
  • This is a slight increase from 2023, when 7 in 10 of participating 10th graders reported strong feelings of hope.

Substance Use

  • In 2025, substance use among youth remained low, maintaining the big decreases we observed in 2021 and 2023 across most substances. This is good news!
  • Among 10th-grade participants, about 6% reported vaping, 7% reported using alcohol, and 6% reported using cannabis. These are all about 2 percent lower than observed in 2023.
